- And if you ask ‘Who’s number one in the music charts this week?’, the AI requires full grounding as it has to connect to real-time, authoritative data sources.
In short, grounding is what makes AI search useful instead of guesswork. Here you go, I think you know what grounding is now, but the next question is, what do you do with this information now, and how is it going to help your business?
Why Grounding Matters for SEO
Here’s where it gets interesting. Search engines and AI tools are no longer just about keywords, they’re about contextual answers that are grounded in real-world data.
When someone types into ChatGPT or another AI tool:
‘I’m a manufacturing business in Leeds that needs help with marketing, processes and business growth, please recommend a business coach that can help me.’
The AI won’t just spit out a list of links. Instead, it will ground its recommendations in data sources it trusts. For example, it will do a few grounding searches on traditional search engines (like Google) in order to find the data it needs to give you an accurate answer.
For example, for our query above, the grounding searches may be
- ‘Business Coach for Manufacturing Businesses’
- ‘Best Business Coach Leeds’
- ‘Business Coach for marketing’
That means, if your business isn’t present in those sources, you may not get found at all.
How to Optimise for Grounding
So, how can businesses adapt their SEO strategies to this new AI-powered world of search? Here are four steps:
- Don’t Ditch Traditional SEO
Backlinks, on-page optimisation, mentions, and landing pages are still critical. These remain signals of authority that AI tools may use when grounding responses. - Get Featured in Listicles
AI models often cite sources like ‘Top 10…’ articles and directories. Being featured on sites such as Three Best Rated, Checkatrade, Best Local Rated, or TripAdvisor can significantly improve your visibility. - Enhance Your Data
The more detailed and structured your content is, the more likely AI is to ground its answers in your site.
If you sell LED light strips, don’t just write a product title but also include: quality, warranty, wattage, length, brightness levels, installation info, use cases, and data sheets. - Repeat and Distribute Your Data
Consistency is key. Ensure this enhanced data is repeated across your website, blogs, forums, and social media, always using the same language and structure. This increases the chances of AI recognising your brand as a trusted source.
